The Second Level Support Service offers school based support, staff development programmes, regional cluster based support and modular courses.
The aims of the SLSS are:
- to assist teachers in acquiring the skills they need to provide their pupils with desired learning experiences
- to assist schools in making informed choices about the programmes that best suit their pupils
- to promote greater coherence in the provision of support
- to take account of the constraints within which schools operate
A feature of support is a focus on generic areas such as teaching and learning methodologies, the curriculum aspect of school development planning, independent learning skills, enterprise education, preparation for the world of work, school-industry-community links, citizenship education and literacy across the curriculum. It is intended that the Second Level Support Service will also develop a capacity to help address the broader support needs of schools and assist in meeting the challenge of future change in education.
